Sapho

Opera by JULES MASSENET, 1897, based on a story by Alphonse Daudet, first produced in Paris. The heroine poses as an artist's model. A young man from the country falls in love with her, but their differences are such that they eventually go their separate ways.

The score is not one of Massenet's best, but it is invariably pleasing in its melodious lilt and harmonious tilt.
