Ocean
The final collaborative work of choreographer MERCE CUNNINGHAM and Composer JOHN CAGE, 1994 , a 90-minute landmark in modern dance in its circular conception and execution. Cunningham was aided in his work, much of which was determined by CHANCE, by LifeForms, a computer program developed specifically for choreographers at Simon Fraser University in Canada.
The music is comprised of two discrete, overlaid works, one ELECTRONIC (DAVID TUDOR'S Soundings: Ocean Diary) and one ACOUSTIC (Andrew Culver's Ocean 1-95 for 112 musicians located above and around the audience, based upon Cage's ideas and instructions pieced together after his death in 1992).
