Ocarina
(It., little goose). A bulbous flute in the shape of a bird. Ocarinas are usually manufactured from terra-cotta, with finger holes and a whistle mouthpiece. They are often used as whistles.
NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV includes an ocarina tuned in an alternating scale of WHOLE TONES and SEMITONES in the score of his OPERA-BALLET Mlada (1892).
