Neue Sachlichkeit
(Ger.). A movement launched in Germany after World War I to describe the "new objectivity" in drama, art, and music as a reaction against the hyper-romantic tendencies of 19th-century culture. The economic necessity of cutting down the production cost of musical presentations resulted in the creation of new types of chamber opera, without a chorus, and a partial return to the classical type of orchestral composition. In many respects, the movement coincided with the aims of GEBRAUCHSMUSIK.
