Neapolitan Sixth
The FIRST INVERSION of a flatted SUPERTONIC chord (♭II6). In C major, this would be the notes F-A♭-D♭. The Neapolitan sixth chord is used as a functional substitute for the SUBDOMINANT in a CADENCE.
While the composers of the BAROQUE Neapolitan school did not invent the chord, they used it so often as to become associated with it.
Near, Holly, American popular vocalist, songwriter, and actress; b. Ukiah, Calif, June 6, 1949. Near sang in public from childhood. She also worked in film and television and had a leading role on Broadway in the rock musical HAIR.
She took a commercially and artistically independent stance with her music, forming the Redwood label to record a series of albums in the '70s and '80s, all of which became known largely by word of mouth. Near was unique in writing socially conscious lyrics set to Broadway-type popular melodies. In the late '70s, she "came out" as a lesbian and began to give concerts only for women audiences.
While preferring smaller venues for her performances, Near has appeared at Carnegie Hall in N.Y. and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She also made film and television appearances, participated in benefit concerts, and engaged in philanthropic work.
With Meg Christiansen and Cris Williamson, Near is one of the most important and influential musicians in the feminist and lesbian communities. Her excellent voice, flexible acting skills, and fiery personality have won her a large and general audience.
