Nazareth (Nazare), Ernesto (Julio de)
Brazilian pianist and composer; b. Rio de Janeiro, March 20, 1863; d. there, Feb. 4, 1934. Nazareth was a pioneer in fostering a national Brazilian type of composition.
Nazareth wrote pieces using European forms but incorporating Brazilian melodies and rhythms. Among the genres he invented were fado brasileiro, tango brasileiro, vaha brasileira, and marcha brasileira. He also composed original dances in the rhythms of the SAMBA and CHÔRO.
