National Anthems

Songs that by accident or intention assume the status of a patriotic HYMN. Most of them are anonymous, and few transcend their functional role and possess genuine musical beauty. Only one, the former Austro-Hungarian anthem (Gott erhalte unsern Kaiser), was written by a major composer (FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN). The same melody has been used as Germany's anthem with different texts during the 20th century.
