Maid of Pskov, The

Opera by NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, 1873, first produced in St. Petersburg. The action takes place in Pskov in 1570, where Ivan the Terrible, accompanied by his dreaded henchmen, enters the city to subdue a growing rebellion. He discovers that a girl betrothed to a rebel is his natural daughter Olga, born to Vera Sheloga. As his soldiers are about to lay Pskov to waste, Ivan orders them to desist to spare Olga, but she runs out into the streets and is slain.
