Mademoiselle Modiste
Comic opera by VICTOR HERBERT, 1905, first performed in N.Y.
A modest young clerk in a Paris hat shop is loved simultaneously by a French nobleman (whose snobbish family rejects her) and an American millionaire. As a preliminary step to conquest, the American sponsors her career as a singer, and she becomes a PRIMA DONNA under an Italian stage name. When she sings at a charity bazaar at her French suitor's castle, the two recognize that the old flame has been rekindled. This time his family is only too happy to allow the match.
