Lady, Be Good!

Musical by GEORGE GERSHWIN, 1924. A brother-and-sister dance team (originally played by Adele and Fred Astaire) encounter an heiress who falls in love with the brother. He at first feels he cannot return her affections, but after a series of comic episodes, the pair is united.

One of Gershwin's best known songs, The Man I Love, was dropped from the show just before its N.Y. opening (it resurfaced in Strike Up the Band, 1927). The song Fascinating Rhythm, which survived the cuts, remains a rare example of POLYMETER (more than one meter expressed at the same time) in American popular song.
