Labèque, Katia

(b. Hendaye, March 3, 1950) and Marielle (b. Hendaye, March 6, 1952), French duo-pianists. The sisters began piano study in early childhood with their mother, a pupil of the great French pianist Marguerite Long (1874-1966). They made their formal debut in Bayonne in 1961.

After completing their studies with Jean-Bernard Pommier at the Paris Conservatory (first prize at graduation, 1968), the Labèques embarked upon a remarkable career as duo-pianists, touring widely in Europe, North America, and the Middle and Far East, giving numerous recitals and appearing with leading orchestras of the world. Their repertoire is wide, ranging from the masterworks of the past to contemporary scores by OLIVIER MESSIAEN, PIERRE BOULEZ, LUCIANO BERIO, and others. They play popular works as well, from SCOTT JOPLIN to GEORGE GERSHWIN. They championed Gershwin's duo-piano versions of Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F, and An American in Paris.
