La, La, Lucille
Musical by GEORGE GERSHWIN, 1919. The first musical composed entirely by Gershwin, it features the song Nobody but You.
A puritanical matron wills her considerable fortune to her nephew on condition that he divorce his wife, a chorus girl. He decides to comply with the terms, divorce his wife, get the legacy, and then remarry her. A Philadelphia hotel employee named Lucille arranges for him to be surprised in the company of a woman not his wife. (At that time, divorces were only granted for adultery or on similar grounds.) He registers at the hotel as John Smith, only to discover that there are 38 other John Smiths already registered there! Much merriment and many mistaken identities follow, until all is brought right in the end.
