The sixth DIATONIC degree of the SCALE. It is also used in the system of MOVABLE DO, where it is also called Lab.

La was the sixth note in medieval musician GUIDO D'AREZZO'S HEXACHORD, or six-note scale, which he developed to teach sight singing. It is based on the last line of the Hymn to St. John, "Labii reatum."
