Káta Kabanová

Opera by LEOŠ JANÁČEK, 1921, first produced in Brno. The libretto is based on the tragedy The Storm by the Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky (1823-86). Káta carries on clandestinely with a friend of her husband's. Internal guilt and external condemnation drive her to suicide, which she accomplished by diving into the Volga during a storm.
