Kashchei, The Immortal
Opera by NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, 1902, first performed in Moscow, 1902. Kashchei's daughter has magical powers that she inherited from her grandfather. By means of a magic potion, she causes Prince Ivan to forget his beloved bride. This done, she sharpens a sword with which she plans to kill him, but at the crucial moment a tempest clears the air and awakens the prince. He returns to his beloved and Kashchei's evil domain is blown away.
This opera is rarely performed, even in Russia, but it is an important work that influenced a whole generation of Russian composers. IGOR STRAVINSKY'S symphonic poem THE FIREBIRD (which features a dance of Kashchei's pagan hordes) was influenced by the harmonic and rhythmic innovations introduced by Rimsky-Korsakov in this opera.
