Jam Session

(abbrev. of jamboree). An informal get-together in which jazz or popular musicians improvise freely, regardless of professional standing. Sometimes the musicians take turns, while at other times several performers will "blow" at once, producing an effect not unlike the early New Orleans era of jazz (or the extremes of FREE JAZZ).
