Hail, Columbia

A patriotic song with words by Joseph Hopkinson (1770-1842), set to the melody of the President's March, attributed to Philip Phile. It was first sung as a finale to a play, The Italian Monk, produced in Philadelphia in 1798. It gradually acquired popularity as a patriotic American ANTHEM.
