Gambler, The

Opera by SERGEI PROKOFIEV, 1929, after a story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first performed not in Russia, but in Brussels. The story deals with a Russian general vacationing at a German resort. He is traveling with his very rich grandmother whose fortune he hopes to inherit. But she proceeds to gamble recklessly, and he is in despair. Fortunately, his servant manages to break the bank on his own, but this leads to further problems.
