(Ger.; Fr. style élégant). In the 18th century, the most fashionable pieces, such as theatrical compositions or dance pieces found in the Baroque SUITE (minuet, gavotte, bourrée, polonaise, air). As the ROCOCO became passé, the term was used more negatively to describe out-of-date works.
