Gagaku

Orchestral music of the Japanese court and aristocracy, stately and HETEROPHONIC (multivoiced), still performed on appropriate occasions. Gagaku is the oldest extant orchestral music in the world. Instruments used include the nyōteki (transverse flute), hichiriki (shawn), shō (mouth organ), and kakko (barrel drums).
