Fain (born Feinberg), Sammy
American composer of popular music; b. N.Y., June 17, 1902; d. Los Angeles, Dec. 6, 1989. Fain worked in VAUDEVILLE and as a song plugger before achieving success as a full-fledged songwriter on Broadway and in Hollywood. In collaboration with the lyricist Irving Kahal, he produced such hits as Nobody Knows What a Red-Headed Mama Can Do; Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella on a Rainy Day; When I Take My Sugar to Tea; Dear Hearts and Gentle People; That Old Feeling; I Can Dream, Can't I; and I'll Be Seeing You. Later, with Paul F. Webster, he composed Secret Love and Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing.
