Faburden
(Old Eng.). In the RENAISSANCE, enhancing a CHANT melody by adding parallel SIXTHS and FOURTHS below, or with the chant serving as middle voice (i.e., with parallel thirds below and parallel fourths above). The technique helped to introduce sixths and thirds as the new CONSONANCES, which were to replace consecutive open FIFTHS and fourths. Faburden is related to the GYMEL and to the FAUXBOURDON.
