(Fr., Scottish). Originally, a Scottish round dance in or time; later, a lively CONTREDANSE in time. The latter entered continental Europe in the early 19th century; LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, FRANZ SCHUBERT, CARL MARIA VON WEBER, and FRÉ DÉ RIC CHOPIN composed them. While known under this and other names (anglaise, française), the écossaise and its relatives probably originated in English country dances. Compare SCHOTTISCHE.
