The Greek term for the SCALES used in BYZANTINE CHANT, paralleling closely the Gregorian system of eight MODES. Collectively they are known as oktoechos (eight modes). Their emergence has been traced to Syrian chant, which is much older than GREGORIAN CHANT. It seems probable that both Byzantine and Gregorian chants were ultimately derived from a Syrian source.
