Daphne

Bucolic tragedy by RICHARD STRAUSS, 1938. It is based on a subject found in the earliest OPERAS: the nymph, Daphne, who eludes the amorous Apollo by transforming herself into a laurel tree. In his unhappiness, he blesses the tree.
