Dalibor

Opera by BEDŘICH SMETANA, 1868. It is based on a historical rebellion of Bohemian peasants led by the hero, Dalibor. He is captured, but a noblewoman who loves him attempts to free him from prison. She disguises herself as a man in an attempt to rescue him. Unlike BEETHOVEN'S FIDELIO, however, the scheme is unsuccessful. Smetana wrote three endings, all tragic.
