Cacophony

(Grk., bad sound). 1. Noise; many sounds at once, so that the overall impression is one of ear-splitting noise. 2. Term used by critics to describe music they can't understand. Thus, an English writer reviewing FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN'S recital in London in 1842 described his music as "excruciating cacophony."
