B Minor
As described by the French composer and organist GUSTAVE CHARPENTIER, a solitaire et mélancolique (solitary and melancholy) key.
PIOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY'S Pathétique Symphony, one of the most melancholy pieces ever written, is in B minor, as are FELIX MENDELSSOHN'S overture Fingal's Cave (suggesting aloofness and remoteness) and the bassoon solo in the second movement Of NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV'S Scheherazade. The first movement of FRANZ SCHUBERT'S Unfinished Symphony expresses deep sadness; not surprisingly, it is written in B minor.
