The letters of BACH'S name, which in German pitch nomenclature correspond to the notes B♭, A, C, and B♮. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH used this chromatic theme in the unfinished last fugue of THE ART OF THE FUGUE, and many composers have since paid tribute by writing pieces based on the same four notes.
