Cypriot Americans

An interview with Cypriot American Nikos Liadis profiled the will of a poor farming family's son in Cyprus to persevere and thrive despite major socio-economic hurdles. Nikos was born on the Greek island of Cyprus during a period of British rule early in the twentieth century. He remembered growing up in a large peasant family greatly susceptible to the effects of droughts resulting in periods when little food was available. Predating most moves to the United States by Greek Cypriots, Nikos' older brother immigrated to America in 1929 and established a restaurant. On Cyprus, Nikos was able to pursue his education beyond elementary school through sheer determination despite his family's poverty. After graduating from high school, Nikos became an interpreter for the British army during World War II.
