Colombian Americans
ml* Isa Chaney tracked the immigrant patterns of the Colombian Americans to answer basic questions like "Do they really take away jobs for Americans?" and "Do many return to Colombia?" Colombian Americans earned the dubious distinction of being second only to Mexico in the number of citizens in the United States without proper residence documents. In addition, for the closing 25 years of the twentieth century Colombia was first among South American countries in the number of legal immigrants. While U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service officials work to ensure the legalities of entry, the scholars work to understand allure of entry. Documents such as Colombian Outpost in New York City present Chaney's findings, and are particularly valuable as baseline information against which later data can be compared.
