Choctaws
The Choctaw Indians were a North American Indian tube that originally settled in the area now known as Mississippi. Although the Choctaws lived peacefully with the US. government for years, the Removal Act of 1830 forced them to migrate westward to what is now Oklahoma. The Choctaws, along with the other members of the "Five Civilized Tribes" were forced to sell their lands against their wishes. The federal government instituted a "detribalization" policy which left members of the Five Civilized Tribes with little authority over their own affairs. Today the Choctaw Indian reservation consists of ten and one-half counties in southeast Oklahoma. The Choctaw Nation is governed by twelve members of the Tribal Council each of whom represent a district within the Choctaw Nation.
