Brazilian Americans

This article, "Newcomers" documents a positive aspect of the American immigrant story in the late 1990s. Recently immigrated Brazilian Americans are transforming a decayed Framingham suburb by purchasing real estate in an area that other citizens have fled. Immigrant stories in the press have often stereotypically suggested the loss of American jobs or the burden to other Americans imposed by welfare benefits extended to newcomers. Immigrant neighborhood enclaves were also cast in a negative perspective. One negative aspect that is suggested in this report is the description of the non-taxed "off-the-books" immigrant business. However, problems with non-taxed business activity is common for most communities. For example, millions of untaxed dollars are spent at yard sales held in every suburb in the country. Additionally, in the 1980s and 1990s a barter system among businesses that avoided taxes was also addressed in many communities....
