Afghan Americans
Afghan Americans are a small population group. Immigration from this nationstate has historically been by students seeking advanced degrees. Afghans were categorized as "other Asian" in early immigration records, so exact figures are not available. There are few statistics from the years prior to 1953. Records show that a group of about 200 Pushtuns, an ethnic group in Afghanistan, immigrated to the United States in 1920. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service records show that 78 people from Afghanistan became U.S. citizens between 1953 and 1963. This figure doubled for the next ten years, with 155 naturalized citizens. Many of these individuals were students who stayed in the country after finishing their degree programs.
