Binx Boiling of The Moviegoer is the first in a line of Percy's typical central characters: affluent, white southern males, somewhat confused, but often with good instincts for finding their way through society. Binx has "a good nose for merde" and Will Barrett of The Last Gentleman (1966) has his "radar." Above all, Percy's heroes are alienated, and they know it.
