The first night out during the game Rainsford is determined not to be the loser and being the skilled hunter that he is, he attempts to use some of the tricks he has learned from his experience. He has a three hour head start and in that time Rainsford makes a trail for Zaroff to follow, but instead of the trail leading in one place he "doubles back" several times, meaning he walks back over the trail he has just made to confuse the hunter. When he is sure that no one can follow this trail he hides in a tree and waits. Rainsford has clearly underestimated the skill that Zaroff has acquired during his time hunting human game and finds him with very little problem. Rather than end the game right there Zaroff lets Rainsford know that he's giving him another chance and this time he would like Rainsford to make it more challenging.
