So, when Rainsford, the other main character in Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game," comes ashore and introduces himself, Zaroff recognizes his name and his reputation as a big game hunter. Zaroff has already been hunting humans, but they have not satisfied his quest for the quintessential intelligent prey. He realizes that Rainsford--as the hunted--will be a true test for Zaroff's skills. For this reason he does not kill him immediately. Zaroff would rather risk his own life hunting Rainsford than eliminate him and lose out on the hunt of a lifetime.
