In “The Most Dangerous Game”, Zaroff makes it very clear to Rainsford and to the reader that he no longer wants to hunt game animals that can not reason or think for themselves.  He is in need of game that have the abilities to think and reason on their own; this is why he originally began to hunt men instead of the average game animal – tigers, jaguars, etc.

The actual reason why he chose Rainsford as his next opponent simply stems from the fact that Rainsford was the next unfortunate person to be shipwrecked, or in Rainsford’s case, to fall off of his boat.  The story does not make it clear why Rainsford is the person who becomes Zaroff’s next hunt other than the fact that he is the next person to wash up on Ship-Trap Island, and it is the fate of any person who washes up on Zaroff’s island that he will be hunted for Zaroff’s pleasure.
