In Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game," the Russian host Zaroff wines and dines Rainsford before their frank discussion on the art of the hunt. Before resettling on Ship-Trap Island, Zaroff had been a general in service to the Russian Czar and had grown up a privileged youth, so he was used to giving orders throughout his life. In matters of the hunt, he was an authority, so it was second nature for him to advise even so equal an expert as Rainsford. But Zaroff is also in search of the most cunning prey possible, and his repeated suggestions to Rainsford are meant to make him an elusive foe--Zaroff's most dangerous game yet.
