Zaroff and Rainsford are alike in many ways. Both are professional hunters and they each observe similar rules of the hunt. They respect one another's skills and treat their prey with some respect, although they disagree on the differences between hunting and murder. To Zaroff, it is just a game, and he allows Rainsford a comfortable head start and, later, gives Rainsford a second chance to prolong the contest. So, when Rainsford successfully escapes and then decides to return, his own sense of honor will not allow him to simply murder his foe. However, in the end, he also decides that Zaroff deserves a taste of his own medicine.
