    At the beginning of "The Most Dangerous Game" the reader is never told who makes the shots that Rainsford hears from the boat. We can infer that the shots come from Zaroff.  After Rainsford meets Zaroff we learn that he hunts people for fun.  From that, the sound of the shots, and the screams we can safely conclude that when Rainford heard the shots while he was still on the sailboat, that the shots were made by Zaroff on one of his man-hunts.
