    Rainsford uses his finely tuned observation skills to trace a struggle between what he at first assumes to be two large animals. Based on the type of tracks, the broken foliage, and other clear signs, Rainsford can tell that whatever battled was skilled and rational. He wonders what type of animals live on the island. This is foreshadowing to the later events of the story. Rainsford soon discovers that Zaroff is the hunter and that humans are the prey, making sense of the strategically planned attack he noted earlier. He is also able to make use of some of the traps that he noticed earlier, and uses his previous observations to allude Zaroff's tracking.
