The most terror that Rainsford feels, is when the entire pack of hounds is unleashed against him after a long night of avoiding being caught by General Zaroff, as well as fighting the environment, such as insects that bit him and struggling to free himself from quicksand.

"At daybreak Rainsford, lying near the swamp, was awakened by a sound that made him know that he had new things to learn about fear. It was a distant sound, faint and wavering, but he knew it. It was the baying of a pack of hounds." (Connell)

How would he defend himself against a pack of vicious dogs, as well as the hunter, for an instant he felt outnumbered.
