But as he forged along he saw to his great astonishment that all the lights were in one enormous building--a lofty structure with pointed towers plunging upward into the gloom. His eyes made out the shadowy outlines of a palatial chateau; it was set on a high bluff, and on three sides of it cliffs dived down to where the sea licked greedy lips in the shadows.

This quote explains Rainsford's discovery of the island's habitation.  He finds a large palace (chateau) that is complete with gargoyles, stone steps, and an imposing stone door.  The inside was very ornately decorated, and Rainsford comments that it looks medieval - many weapons adorning the walls, a large and long banquet table in the dining room, etc..  The medieval connection helps to forshadow for the reader the barbaric nature of the palace's owner.

As for the vegetations surrounding the palace - the island is made up of rocky cliffs and dense jungle, which will prove to be both an obstacle and a help for Rainsford once he becomes the prey.
