In thinking of the island itself, one must be careful not to forget what surrounds it: miles and miles of salt water. The water comes in handy for Rainsford when he submerges himself in it to hide from Zaroff during the later stages of the hunt.
Also on the island, however, one can find the quicksand of the Death Swamp (as you mentioned), thick, leafy foliage within the tropical forest, and of course, Zaroff's palatial home. Some changes Rainsford makes to the terrain include his traps -- the Malay Man-catcher and the Burmese tiger pit. The traps were not a feature of the island before the arrival of Rainsford, however.
Do not forget that just off the island, Zaroff had installed phony channel lights to trick ships into crashing onto the island's jagged rocks. Zaroff did this so that he could then hunt the ship's occupants, humans. He prefers to think of his trap, however, as "helping fate," according to the text.
