    The island to which Rainsford swims after falling off the yacht is called Ship-trap Island. At the beginning of the story, Rainsford asks about the island, and Whitney tells him that it is "rather a mystery." He says that sailors have a "curious dread" about the island and that it has a bad reputation. Rainsford suggests that perhaps cannibals inhabit the island, and Whitney responds, "Hardly. Even cannibals wouldn't live in such a God-forsaken place. But it's gotten into sailor lore, somehow." Rainsford will soon learn why this island is so feared.
