    Rainsford is standing at the edge of a cliff trying to decide whether to take the chance of jumping off to escape Zaroff's hounds. The author uses the edge of the cliff to create suspense. When Rainsford falls over, the reader doesn't know whether he survives or not until the very end of the story.
