The island is only referred to as Ship-Trap Island when Whitney tells Sanger Rainsford the legend about ships going in and never returning.  The legend is very similar to the tale of the Sirens in The Odyssey.  Rainsford later learns that General Zaroff uses lights to lure ships in, creating a false sense of security.  The ships hit the rocks, stranding the sailors with the murderous Zaroff.  The Sirens do the same thing; they lure sailors to their death.

The only information Connell gives about the island is that it is located in the Caribbean Sea.   Zaroff owns the island, but he mentions no name.
