Rainsford is on his way to Rio to pick up hunting guns especially designed for shooting jaguars. He is an accomplished hunter out to find a new thrill, and the blood-lust passion of the hunt is very present within him. At the same time, however, there is a note of indifference in his tone, which could be interpreted as oncoming boredom.
At thisĀ point Rainsford is very much like Zarkoff himself, except he has not stooped to the level of wanting to hunt men instead of animals. As their yacht passes the mysterious island rumoured as being cursed, he tells his friend Whitney that it is ridiculous to think that a hunted animal could feel what humans identify as 'fear.'
He probably has second thoughts about this before the end of the story!
