The "celebrated hunter" Sanger Rainsford is greeted by the largest human he has ever seen when he first arrives on Ship-Trap Island in Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game." Coming ashore after falling off his yacht, Rainsford spots the lights of an enormous house and uses the gargoyle knocker to announce his presence. When the door opens, there stands

...a gigantic creature, solidly made and black bearded to the waist. In his hand the man held a long-barreled revolver, and he was pointing it straight at Rainsford's heart.

It is Ivan, the deaf and dumb Russian Cossack who stands watch over his master's home. The man makes no sound nor does he appear to comprehend Rainsford's greeting. He stands erect in a black uniform with the pistol still pointing at his guest. Raising the hammer of the gun, the giant suddenly snaps to attention, clicks his heels and salutes a man who regally descends the marble steps within. The man is General Zaroff.
